Die zunehmende Verfügbarkeit quantitativer Indikatoren über demographische, ökonomische, soziale und politische Entwicklungen auf globaler, regionaler und nationaler Ebene sowie die Weiterentwicklung der Computertechnologien im Hard- und Softwarebereich, verbunden mit einer neuen Interdependenz- oder Ganzheitsperspektive beim Verständnis sozio-ökonomischer Prozesse, führten im letzten Jahrzehnt zur Entwicklung einer ganzen Reihe von sogenannten Weltmodellen.
