Zusammenfassung
Die Anzahl der Schwachsinnigen und Idioten beläuft sich in der Bundesrepublik auf ungefähr 1,5 Mio. Das sind rund 2,5% der Bevölkerung. Hinter mehreren Nerven- und Geisteskrankheiten verbergen sich erbbedingte Stoffwechselstörungen. Dem Stoffwechsel unterliegen u.a. drei große Gruppen von Nahrungsstoffen: Kohlenhydrate, Fette und Eiweiße. Die Eiweißkörper enthalten in ungeheurer Vielzahl von Kombinationen etwa 25 Aminosäuren. Bei einigen Erbkrankheiten ist der Stoffwechsel von Aminosäuren, beispielsweise der von Phenylalanin, gestört. Ein derartiges Krankheitsbild heißt Phenylketonurie (PKU).
