In PostScript sind alle Informationen, die mit den Schriften zusammenhängen, in Fonts untergebracht. Ein Font in PostScript ist eine Dictionary, die spezielle Einträge besitzt. Die Zeichen selbst werden mit PostScript-Prozeduren erzeugt, die ebenfalls in dem Font definiert sind. Diese Zeichenprozeduren bestehen im wesentlichen aus den Befehlen ≫moveto≪, ≫lineto≪, ≫curveto≪ und ≫fill≪.
