Zusammenfassung

Die Beschäftigung mit dem Phänomen des „Ethnischen” bzw. interethnischer Beziehungen ist in der Ethnologie schon von ihrer Fachbezeichnung her ein ureigenes Aufgabengebiet, das jedoch erst etwa nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg in den Vordergrund gerückt ist. Ein allgemeiner Grund hierfür mag der Zusammenbruch der großen Kolonialreiche gewesen sein und die daraus resultierende Artikulation ethnischer Probleme, Interessen, Identitäten usw. auf internationaler Ebene. Eine weitere Herausforderung stellte die amerikanische melting-pot-Diskussion dar und die Erkenntnis, daß die zahlreichen Einwanderer in Amerika sich zwar an den american way of life weitgehend anpaßten, aber was ihre ethnische Identität anging, in je nach der Situation ganz differenzierter Weise reagierten. Die Diskussion wurde allerdings besonders unter Soziologen geführt, die in Ermangelung ethnologischer Vorgaben, sei es auch nur bei der Frage um die Definition von „Ethnie” oder „ethnischer Identität”, zu eigenen Erklärungsansätzen und Terminologien kamen.1
