Eine indigene Standortbestimmung der Soziologie

Zusammenfassung

Der Zustand der theoretischen Soziologie gilt als “konfus” (Lindenberg 1986). Sie leidet, wie Luhmann urteilt, unter einer “multiplen Paradigmatase” (Luhmann 1980, S. 50) und schon Talcott Parsons beklagte den “Kampf der Schulen” (Parsons 1948, S. 157), der jede einheitliche Orientierung behindert und die Theorieentwicklung neuerdings dem Verdacht aussetzt, kaum mehr zu sein als ein Ausdruck “postmoderner Grundlosigkeit” (Giesen 1991, S. 11). Frägt man nach den Gründen für diese Entwicklung, dann drängen sich zumindest drei Problembereiche auf, die die Soziologie bislang nur wenig erfolgreich bearbeitet hat. Zum einen wird seit Hobbes und Hegel die offenbar unbeantwortbare Frage gestellt, welcher Methode die Soziologie folgen solle, welchen erkenntnistheoretischen Status sie als Wissenschaft in Anspruch nehmen dürfe, ja ob sie überhaupt auf einen einheitlichen Kanon methodischer Regeln beruhe. Zum anderen ist bis in unsere Tage nicht abschließend zu klären, welche der zahllosen theoretischen Einzeltraditionen die sichersten Erklärungsversprechen macht, welche der divergierenden theoretischen “Kulturen” Hoffnungen auf kumulative Verbesserungen rechtfertigt (vgl. Schmid 1993a). Und endlich ist der Hiatus zwischen theoretischer Reflexion und empirischer Forschung offensichtlich nur selten überwindbar.
