Die "Studiengruppe zur Automatisierung in Reise und Touristik" (START) wurde 1971 gegründet. 1976 wurde die Studiengesellschaft in die Betriebsgesellschaft "START Datentechnik für Reise und Touristik GmbH" umgewandelt. Die Markteinführung des START Systems erfolgte Mitte 1979.
