Zusammenfassung
In der Nachkriegszeit war die Biotechnologie mehr als nur ein Bündel neuer Techniken. Sie war eine ideale Alternative zu einer Reihe weltzerstörerischer neuer Technologien, die mit dem „militärisch-industriellen Komplex“ verbunden waren (wie Eisenhower selbst das Vermächtnis seiner Präsidentschaft bemängelte). Bierkunden mögen konservativ sein, aber die Welt außerhalb eines Lokals konnte es sich nicht leisten, sich in Antworten auf Armut, Überbevölkerung und Hunger so wenig zu bewegen. Hier gab es sicherlich einen wertvollen und geeigneten Schwerpunkt für eine revolutionäre Technologie, die sich mit der Umwandlung landwirtschaftlicher Produkte befaßte.
Die Biologen werden die Verantwortung übernehmen müssen, die Biotechnologie in der biologischen Forschung auf ein festes Fundament zu stellen und dafür zu sorgen, daß sie unter gebührender Berücksichtigung der Ökologie und ihrer langfristigen Folgen angewendet wird.
