Stresses in the Upper Crust as Derived from in-situ Stress Measurements — A Review

  • Chapter
Terrestrial and Space Techniques in Earthquake Prediction Research

Summary

Stress measurements at greater depth are becoming increasingly important in geosciences. Therefore, this review tends to present information on stress measuring techniques applied at present, and to summarize some data available for various parts of the earth’s crust in a rather general form. The review concludes that it is not possible to give any general formula to predict stresses at depth. However, data for distinct geological provinces suggest models which could be applicable to other areas with similar geological and tectonical features.
