Zusammenfassung
Man kann Gesellschaftssysteme danach kennzeichnen, wie die Mehrzahl der in ihnen lebenden Menschen ihren Lebensunterhalt erwirbt. Aus dieser Sicht kennen wir Jäger- und Sammlergesefischaften, Agrargesellschaften seit ca. 10 000 v. Chr. und Industriegesellschaften seit ca. 1600 n. Ch. Jeder von diesen Gesellschaftstypen unterschied sich von seinen Vorgängern durch durchschnittlich größere wirtschaftliche Produktivität und längere Lebenserwartung ihrer Mitglieder, aber der Übergang von einer dieser Gesellschaftsformen zur nächsten vollzog sich in einem Maßstab von Generationen und Jahrhunderten.
