T-Cell Mediated Immunopathology in Viral Infections

Abstract

Virus-specific cytotoxic T cells are crucially involved in host recovery from primary infection. Due to the immunological destruction of infected host cells, immunopathological damage may determine the severity of disease caused by poorly cytopathic or non-cytopathic viruses. Some forms of virally induced hepatitis or of acquired immunodeficiency may be mediated by immunopathologically active virus-specific T cells.
