Zusammenfassung
Die Geologie der Tief see unterscheidet sich in vieler Hinsicht grundsätzlich von der der Kontinente. Die ozeanische Kruste ist dünner, spezifisch schwerer, nach Material und Stil einfacher aufgebaut, und sie ist erheblich jünger als die kontinentale Kruste (Tab. 1). Weite Bereiche der Kontinente wurden und werden herausgehoben und dadurch bis auf die Wurzeln mit den ältesten
Gesteinen abgetragen. Das weggeführte Material wird vor allem am Rand der Kontinente abgelagert. Im allgemeinen bedeckt nur eine wenig mächtige Sedimenthaut die Tiefseeböden unterhalb 2 km Wassertiefe. Sie wird seewärts rasch dünner. Unter wesentlich homogeneren Bedingungen entstanden, sind die Tiefseesedimente einheitlicher als die anderer Bildungsräume. Unterschiedliche Schichten halten horizontal viel weiter aus als die Ablagerungen auf den Kontinenten und an deren Rändern.
