Zusammenfassung
Das Gyrotron ist eine Mikrowellen-Oszillatorröhre, die auf dem Prinzip der Elektronen-Zyklotron-Maser-Instabilität beruht. Die Energie der Larmor-kreisbewegung eines relativistischen Elektronenstrahls in einem magnetischen Längsfeld ist dabei die freie Energie. Der kohärente Energietransfer von den gyrierenden Elektronen in das elektromagnetische Feld einer transversal elektrischen Resonatorschwingung findet aufgrund einer azimutalen Phasen-fokussierung statt, wobei die Schwingungsfrequenz etwas größer als die relativistische Elektronen-Zyklotron-Frequenz, bzw. als eine ihrer höheren Harmonischen sein muß. Da die Betriebsfrequenz des Gyrotrons durch die Zyklotronfrequenz vorgegeben ist, kann der Resonator im Gegensatz zu Klystronresonatoren bei Schwingungstypen höherer Ordnung betrieben werden und somit größer dimensioniert werden. Daher steht eine größere Querschnittsfläche für den Strahldurchgang zur Verfügung, so daß man höchste Leistungen bei höheren Frequenzen als mit dem Klystron erzielen kann. Zur Zeit werden Dauerleistungen bis zu 100 kW bei 140 GHz (2,14 mm Wellenlänge) mit Wirkungsgraden um 35% erreicht. Im Sekundenpulsbetrieb liegt die Ausgangsleistung um 1 MW, wobei der Wirkungsgrad mittels eines Kollektors mit negativem Gegenpotential auf ca. 50% erhöht wurde. Gyrotronoszillatoren werden derzeit vorwiegend zur Erzeugung, Heizung, Stabilitätskontrolle und Diagnostik von magnetisch eingeschlossenen Plasmen bei der Erforschung der Energiegewinnung durch kontrollierte Kernfusion eingesetzt. In jüngster Zeit jedoch finden Gyrotrons auch für technologische Prozesse, wie zum Beispiel Sintern und Verbinden von Hochleistungskeramiken, erfolgreich Verwendung.
