Zusammenfassung
Verhalten und Entwicklungsprozesse von Tieren, Mikroorganismen und Pflanzen werden in vielfältiger Weise durch Licht gesteuert. Die visuelle Wahrnehmung steuert bei Tieren das Sozialverhalten, trägt zur Beutefindung bei und löst Fluchtverhalten aus. Ähnlich wichtige Funktionen nimmt die Phototaxis niederer Tiere, einzelliger Grünalgen und Bakterien ein. Auch für die standortfesten Pflanzen ist eine Einschätzung der Lichtverhältnisse ihrer Umgebung wichtig, bildet doch das Licht die Energiequelle für die pflanzliche Photosynthese. Weiterhin benötigen die Pflanzen eine Kontrolle über die Sonnenposition, die Tageslänge, bzw. den — auch jahreszeitlich veränderlichen —Tag/Nachtrhythmus und über eine eventuelle Abschattung durch überwachsende andere Pflanzen. Zu beachten ist auch die prinzipielle Photorezeption eines Pflanzenkeimlings, der erst nach Durchbrechen der Erdoberfläche die volle Lichtintensität erfährt und dann beginnt, seine Chlorophyllbiosynthese anzuschalten bzw. die Bausteine für die Photosynthese herzustellen.
