Abstract

Albania as a part of Balkan peninsula is one of the most active seismic countries in the Mediterranean Region. It is sufficient to mention that during the last thirty years our country was hit many times by damaging earthquakes: 16 of M = 5.5 (Io = VII), 3 of M = 6.0–6.5 (Io = VIII) and 2 of M = 6.5–7.0 (Io = IX). The strongest one was the earthquake of April 15, 1979 (M = 6.8, Io = IX+) the epicenter of which was situated between Albania and Montenegro.
