Abstract
It has been fifteen years since the introduction of the concept of technology assessment. During that time the concept has evolved through experience and shared learning. I will summarize some of those changes, emphasizing the many kinds of assessment programs which have developed. To relate these remarks to the assessment of the impacts of information technology I suggest five characteristics of information technology which could guide the search for potential impacts.
