Abstract
Competition has increased to a great extent in markets for national and international goods and services: by the introduction and enlargement of the Common Market; by the opening of Central- and East-European countries; and by the general globalization of the markets for goods, services, and resources. The internationalization of competition is requiring a higher degree of adaptability of industries, sectors, and regions: to technological and organizational progress with ever shorter product life-cycles; to cost-cutting and higher productivity by such means as “lean production”, “team production”, “in- and/or outsourcing”; to the functional division of labor across space; and to an increase of non-price competition, especially in the prevailing oligopolistic markets in which all kinds of informational first-mover advantages are relevant (Demsetz 1982; Marris & Mueller 1980; Koutsoyiannis 1982). In contestable markets these informational leads will only exist temporarily. In markets with barriers to entry they may permit long-term monopolistic behavior and market dominance (Martin 1993; see also Gerosky 1987).
