Zusammenfassung
Wir untersuchen die mentale Repräsentation einer der grundlegendsten räumlichen Beziehungen zwischen Objekten im Raum: ihre topologische Beziehung. Für die Raumkognitionsforschung sind topologische Relationen besonders grundlegend, weil sie völlig unabhängig von der möglichen Wahl eines Koordinaten- oder Bezugssystems sind und deshalb auch bei einer Änderung eines solchen Systems erhalten bleiben. Anders formuliert, berücksichtigen topologische Relationen nur die Beziehungen zwischen Regionen, Objekten und ihren Rändern und sind invariant unter stetigen Transformationen wie Rotation, Ausdehnung und Größenänderung. Eine Entsprechung finden solche nur „nachbarschaftserhaltende“ Relationen (Homöomorphie) in sprachlichen Ausdrücken wie berührt, liegt in, umfaßt usw.
