Zusammenfassung

Als einer der Protagonisten des interpretive turn übt Clifford Geertz seit nunmehr dreißig Jahren einen richtungsweisenden Einfluss in der sozialwissenschaftliehen Theoriebildung aus. Aber es gibt keine politikwissenschaftliche Rezeption seiner Thesen. Das ist verwunderlich und bedauernswert. Denn Geertz, dessen eigentliche Wissenschaft die Kulturanthropologie ist, gebietet wie nicht leicht ein anderer über sozialwissenschaftliche und ethnologische Kompetenz zugleich. Sein Werk scheint deswegen wie geschaffen, Politikwissenschaftlern einen Zugang zur Auseinandersetzung mit dem ‚Fremden‘ und den Prozessen der Fremdbegegnung zu geben. Diese Auseinandersetzung steht zudem auf der Tagesordnung einer Politikwissenschaft, die die multikulturellen und interkulturellen Prozesse in der enger zusammenrückenden Welt der Gegenwart treffend zu bestimmen, einschätzen und nicht zuletzt auch zu gestalten sucht.
