Zusammenfassung
Eine algebraische Fläche im Raum ist die Nullstellenfläche eines Polynoms. Im Anschauungsraum realisierbar sind natürlich nur reelle affine Flächen, das sind Flächen {(x, y, z) ∈ ℝ 3: f (x, y, z) = 0} f (x, y, z) = ∑ a ijk x i y j z k, a ijk ∈ ℝ Demgegenüber sind gerade komplexe projektive Flächen der Theorie am besten zugänglich. Natürlich läßt sich jedes reelle Polynom auch als komplexes Polynom auffassen, und die reelle Nullstellenfläche ist dann der reelle Teil der entsprechenden komplexen Fläche. Weiter läßt sich jedes Polynom homogenisieren, und die affine Fläche ist der im Endlichen gelegene Teil der entsprechenden projektiven Fläche. Zu jeder reell-affinen algebraischen Fläche gehört also eine komplex-projektive Fläche.
