Zusammenfassung
Nach dem Einzug der Globalisierungsdiskussion in die internationale Managementliteratur Anfang der achtziger Jahre hat sich die Erkenntnis durchgesetzt, daß die zunehmende und weiterhin anhaltende Globalisierung der Märkte die Steuerung multinationaler Unternehmungen (MNUs) substantiell beeinflußt. So ist zu beobachten, daß sich die Konsumentenpräferenzen in fast allen Ländern mit zunehmendem wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungsgrad dem der entwickelten Industrienationen annähern. Über kulturelle und ethnische Grenzen hinweg werden Konsumgüter heute nicht nur in den Triademärkten USA, Europa und Japan nachgefragt, sondem auch in ‘Newly Industrialized Countries’ (vgl. Ohmae 1985). Die aktuellen Veränderungen in China und der ehemaligen UdSSR bestätigen die Konvergenzthese eindrucksvoll. Die Weiterentwicklung der Kommunikations- und Transporttechnologie sowie die andauernde Liberalisierung des Welthandels haben die Diffusion einheitlicher Konsumgewohnheiten und Lebensstile entscheidend unterstützt. Bedingt durch die Erfolge bei den GATT-Verhandlungen haben nationale Ländergrenzen in vielen Bereichen ihre traditionell separierende Funktion verloren. Für MNUs ist damit der Transfer von Kapital, Ressourcen, Know-how und Personal über Ländergrenzen im Vergleich zu den sechziger und siebziger Jahren erheblich vereinfacht worden. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Entwicklungen und den daraus resultierenden strategischen Optionen ergeben sich grundsätzlich veränderte Steuerungsanforderungen an das Management weltweit operierender Geschäftseinheiten.
