Zusammenfassung

Im Juni 1998 standen bei Ford in Köln und Dagenham die Fließbänder für drei Tage still. Der Grund hierfür lag in dem Ausfall eines wichtigen Lieferanten: Kiekert war aufgrund von Qualitätsproblemen nicht in der Lage, Türschlösser an Ford zu liefern. In ähnlicher Weise musste Toyota in Japan die Produktion in einigen Teilbereichen für sechs Wochen stoppen, weil die Fertigung eines bedeutsamen Lieferanten durch ein Feuer zerstört worden war. Doch auch andere Ereignisse, wie z.B. die Maul-und-Klauen- Seuche in Großbritannien oder die Terroranschläge vom 11. September 2001 in den USA, hatten für zahlreiche Unternehmen in diesen Ländern gravierende Auswirkungen auf die Versorgungssicherheit, da die Material- und Warenflüsse erheblich gestört wurden (Sheffi (2001); Jüttner/Peck/Christopher (2002); Martha/Subbakrishna (2002)).
