Zusammenfassung
Der Anteil der Demenz vom Alzheimer-Typ an der Gesamtheit der Altersdemenzen beträgt inzwischen 50 – 70 %. Die Multiinfarktdemenz, also die auf arteriosklerotischen Veränderungen basierende, durch zerebrovaskuläre Insuffizienz verursachte Demenz stellt dagegen nur einen etwa 15 – 30%igen Anteil an allen Demenzen dar (Tomlinson 1980). Allein die restlichen 15 – 20 % sind jedoch in gewissem Umfang therapierbar, da sich hier zumeist Ursachen endokriner Natur, Verschiebungen im Elektrolythaushalt, Intoxikationen, Infektionen, raumfordernde zerebrale Prozesse und dergleichen mehr als Auslöser der Demenz diagnostizieren lassen (Mumenthaler 1987). Für die Demenz vom Alzheimer-Typ besteht noch keine kausale Therapiemöglichkeit, nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil die Pathogenese dieser Erkrankung bislang noch als ungeklärt gelten muß.
