Die Zukunft der Städte in der Bundesrepublik

Zusammenfassung

Im Jahre 1980 wurde der Bericht einer noch unter Präsident Carter eingerichteten Kommission zur Lage der nordamerikanischen Städte in den 80er Jahren vorgelegt, „Urban America in the Eighties“. Die von Wissenschaftlern verschiedener Disziplinen unterstützte Kommission gelangte u.a. zu dem Schluß, die Städte würden „schmerzhafte“ Prozesse von Wachstum und Schrumpfung durchlaufen, und weiter heißt es:

„The redistributions resulting from the larger transformation of the eco-nomy and society will, of necessity, disadvantage certain places while they advantage others, The nations Settlements will have to undergo the-se adjustments, and their ‘health’ will often have to be appreciated at new levels of population and employment.

The nation can no longer assume that cities will perform the füll ränge of their traditional functions for the larger society. They are no longer the most desirable settings for living, working, or producing. They should be allowed to transform into more specialized service and consump-tion centers within larger urban economic Systems„ (PRESIDENT’S COMMIS-SION 1980:4).
