Zusammenfassung

Der Begriff der Segregation wurde von Ernest W. Burgess, Robert E.Park und Roderick D. McKenzie geprägt, die in den zwanziger Jahren Untersuchungen über die räumliche Struktur von Chicago veröffentlichten. Grundannahme in diesen Studien ist, daß es in der Stadt bzw. Stadtregion ähnliche „Verteilungskämpfe“ wie in der Natur gibt, den Revieren (oder Lebensräumen) von Flora und Fauna entsprechen die (Wohn-) Standorte von (Stadt-)Bewohnern. Der Begriff der Segregation bezeichnet jenen ökologischen Prozeß, der zur Bildung von „natürlichen Lebensräumen“ führt (vgl. Park und Burgess 1921, S. 252—254), in denen Personengruppen unterschiedlicher Zugehörigkeit (z.B. zu ethnischen Gruppen) leben. Derartig unterschiedliche Lebensräume von Stadtbewohnern hat schon Friedrich Engels (1974) in seinem 1845 erschienenen Buch „Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England“ bei seiner Beschreibung von Manchester dargestellt.
