Weltweit ist Energie eine grundlegende Voraussetzung für das Funktionieren und die Entwicklung der Wirtschaft und damit für die Versorgung der Bevölkerung sowie für sozialen Fortschritt. Es besteht ein enger Zusammenhang zwischen Energieverbrauch und wirtschaftlicher Aktivität. In den letzten 50 Jahren stieg der Weltenergieverbrauch durchschnittlich ebenso schnell wie das Wachstum des Weltbruttosozialprodukts.
