Zusammenfassung

Debatten über das Ausmaß von Armut in westlichen Gesellschaften sind von Definitionsproblemen durchsetzt und behindert. Die Armut des einen ist des anderen Reichtum. Mindeststandards, die für eine fortgeschrittene Industriegesellschaft entwickelt worden sind, stellen sich in einer unterentwickelten Gesellschaft als utopische Zielvorgaben dar. In einer Gesellschaft, in der die Unterprivilegierten ihr Schicksal mit dem anderer Menschen vergleichen können, die in der Hierarchie von Einkommen und Vermögen besser gestellt sind, werden gewisse Deprivationen nicht hingenommen. In anderen Gesellschaften werden diese Deprivationen als legitim akzeptiert, da dort solche Vergleiche weder sozial möglich noch kulturell gestützt sind.
