Zusammenfassung
Eine Frage steht im Zentrum der Massenkommunikationsforschung seit Anbeginn, die Frage: Wie verhalten sich Medien und Realität zueinander? Dies war bereits der Ausgangspunkt der Inhaltsanalyse von Tageszeitungen von J. Gilmer Speed, veröffentlicht im Jahre 1893, einer der ersten empirischen Untersuchungen von Massenmedien. Speed stellte die Frage: „Do newspapers now give the news?“ und beantwortete sie mit einer Verneinung: „Our newspapers do not record the really serious happenings, but only the sensations, the catastrophes of history“ (Speed 1893, S. 710).
