Zusammenfassung
Überraschend stießen Paul F. Lazarsfeld, Bernard Berelson und Hazel Gaudet (1944; 1948) in der Studie „The People’s Choice“, die während einer Präsidentschaftswahl in den USA durchgeführt wurde, um die Wirkung der Wahlpropaganda festzustellen, auf interpersonale Einflüsse: Die Wähler ließen sich ganz offensichtlich nicht durch die Propaganda in den Massenmedien beeinflussen, wie man damals noch annahm, sondern als viel einflußträchtiger erwies sich der face-to-face-Kontakt mit anderen Personen. Wählen stellte für die meisten Befragten eine „Gruppenerfahrung“ dar, wurde doch geradezu in Gruppen abgestimmt : „Personen, die zusammen arbeiten oder leben oder spielen, wählen in hohem Maße dieselben Kandidaten“ (Lazarsfeld et al. 1948, S. 137). Der „molekulare Druck“ der persönlichen Kommunikation sorgte auch dafür, daß noch unentschiedene Wähler oder Abweichler „auf eine Linie“ gebracht wurden; interpersonale Kommunikation erzeugte nämlich eine stärkere Aktivierung der Prädispositionen, so daß bereits erkennbare Absichten verstärkt wurden (ebd., S. 146).1
