Zusammenfassung
The McCloy Program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government has been a remarkable success in its 15-year history by every standard. The students have been excellent and they are already distinguishing themselves in their professional careers. The program also served as a catalyst for similar international programs at the Kennedy School. And, most importantly, the program has been a positive factor in the German-American relationship, and it will continue to contribute to the relationship in the future thanks to the German-American endowment that funds it. This volume provides an opportunity for some personal reflections on the history of the McCloy Program, and it reminds me how valuable it would be to write a more complete analysis of the developments since the early 1980s. I am in the fortunate position that I have been associated with the McCloy Program as its director since it started at Harvard in 1983. In this chapter I would like to set out some observations on (1) the establishment of the program in 1982–83, (2) the renewal proposal for the program and the establishment of an endowment in the 1986–92 period, and (3) the students in the McCloy Scholars Program.
Dr. James A. Cooney ist Executive Director des Weatherhead Center for Intemational Affairs an der Harvard University.
