In der Alltagssprache werden unter Institutionen im allgemeinen bestimmte Einrichtungen verstanden, die Aufgaben, die meist im öffentlichen Interesse liegen, in organisierter Form wahrnehmen, wie z. B. Schulen, Hochschulen (Ausbildimg, Forschung), Kirchen (religiöse Dienste), Gerichte (Rechtsprechung), Behörden (Verwaltung), Krankenhäuser (Heilfursorge), Zeitung, Rundfunk, Fernsehen (Information, Unterhaltung), Eisenbahn, Straßenbahn, Post (Vermittlungsdienste).
