Abstract

In this chapter two detection modes will be discussed that are based on the measurement of an electric current: amperometric and conductivity detection. Both modes are invasive techniques, i.e., they both require a direct contact between the separation medium and the sensing element(s), the electrode(s). In other respects there are cardinal differences between the two. Amperometric detection relies on the chemical characteristics of specific analytes, while with conductivity detection a bulk property of the separation medium is monitored. The first technique is therefore selective, the second inherently non-selective.
