Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a relatively young technique with a firm historical foundation. The first appearance of CE, in a configuration essentially the same as we know it today, can be found in 1981 with the publication of an article by Jorgenson and Lukacs, working at the University of North Carolina (USA), in Analytical Chemistry [1]. They showed the separation of dansyl and fluorescamine derivatized amino acids, peptides and amines in a Pyrex glass capillary with an internal diameter of 75 μm, using a 30 kV voltage source to drive the electrophoretic separation.
