Abstract
ATM technology has found its champions amongst people from the telecom industry and from the computer industry. As a result, it is not obvious what the most promising introduction scenarios might be. A very pragmatic viewpoint might be: Whatever the potential benefits of ATM, it also has to support the existing world. This statement might mean a number of things.
