Zusammenfassung
Zur Bewertung der Gestaltung von Wissensystemen (z.B. Datenbanken) ist es notwendig, Kriterien aus Theorien des Wissens abzuleiten. Wie Toulmin (1972) feststellt, besteht ein gravierender Unterschied zwischen philosophischen Theorien des Wissens und den Prozessen, die sich bei der Sammlung, Bewertung und Ableitung von Wissen in wissenschaftlichen wie alltäglichen Kontexten abspielen. Philosophische Theorien des Wissens sind nach Toulmin durch die Suche nach grundlegenden Prinzipien charakterisiert, mit Hilfe derer der menschliche Geist die intellektuelle Beherrschung einer als stabil angenommenen Ordnung der Natur zu erreichen sucht. Damit wird die Rolle der Wissensphilosophie auf die Bewertung von vorhandenem Wissen eingeschränkt; Popper (1934) grenzt sogar den Erwerb neuen Wissens oder die Aufstellung neuer Theorien explizit aus der Epistemologie aus und verweist darauf, daß dies Fragen der Psychologie seien.
