Overview
Four closely related principles define Enterprise-wide Information Management (EwIM). The principles describe the conditions for the successful application of information technology in the enterprise.
-
1.
Information Technology Purpose: Information technology (I/T) linked to business purpose, objectives, and values, adds value to the enterprise.
-
2.
Information Technology Value: information technology adds value to the enterprise by contributing to measurable financial and business performance improvement for the enterprise and each enterprise component. The value and justification for investment in information technology, including infrastructure and application portfolios, is based on performance improvement.
-
3.
Information Technology Planning: I/T planning and management is linked to business strategic and tactical planning and management in order to achieve enterprise performance improvement.
-
4.
Information Technology Organization: Information technology departments are linked to business operating departments in order to plan and accomplish enterprise performance improvements.
These four principles are the foundation for EwlM planning frameworks and planning processes. This paper is a brief overview and leads the reader to further descriptions and examples of their application. The paper is organized in two main parts:
Chapter 2 explores the EwlM purpose and planning principles and describes the EwlM frameworks that define them. Chapter 3 explores EwlM value and organization principles that implement the EwlM purpose and planning concepts. An Appendix includes further information about EwlM and its components, including Information Economics.

Other publications
Stacey Flynn of the Gartner Group issued a Research Note about Information Economics titled “The Information Economics Model: it provides a structured methodology for evaluating I/T investments,” Research Note M-550-419, Gartner Group, Stamford, CT., December 31,1991. In this note she said: “The Information Economics Model... does not appear to suffer from the flaws often associated with academia, in that the model has been employed successfully by users and is adaptable to different environments.”
An interesting review of Information Economics is in the Journal of Information Technology, Volume 5, Number 1, pp 55-58, March 1990. Stephanie Lester, City University Business School, focuses the discussion on the iEcon process that “allows the organization to see the worth of a project to that organization and in direct comparison to other projects.”
