Abstract

According to the editor of the Journal of International Business Studies this is «the age of alliance capitalism». And in fact there is a growing body of literature that deals with a variety of aspects of cooperative strategies. A recent series of three conferences on the subject, sponsored by JIBS, was held successively in North America, Europe and Asia. Three books and a special issue of JIBS (1996) were produced as a result, and add to an impressive body of literature on the subject.

I would like to aknowledge the generous support of the SSHRC and of the Cetai (Center for international business studies of HEC), for the research that underlies the theories presented in this paper.
