Zusammenfassung
In den neunziger Jahren unterlagen die Bankenmärkte in vielen Ländern substantiellen Veränderungen. Eine dieser Veränderungen, die durch technischen Fortschritt wie z. B. den wesentlich verbesserten Möglichkeiten der elektronischen Datenübermittlung vorangetrieben wurde, betrifft den Vertriebsweg von Bankprodukten und wird auch als „Direct Banking“ bezeichnet. Nachdem in der letzten Dekade zunächst viele sogenannte „Direktbanken“ gegründet wurden, die primär Direct Banking betreiben, haben inzwischen auch die meisten konventionellen Banken reagiert und bieten Produkte über den Direktvertrieb an. Wie vielen der durch die Fortschritte in der Informationstechnologie stark beeinflußten Branchen wurden auch dem Direct-Banking-Geschäft vielerorts große Wachstumschancen prognostiziert und erwartet, daß die Direct-Banking-Innovation den Bankensektor revolutionieren würde. Zwar haben sich die Erwartungen im Hinblick auf die jüngeren Entwicklungen etwas relativiert; dennoch bleiben die Prognosen in Bezug auf mögliches zukünftiges Wachstum recht positiv. Direct Banking hat die Bankenlandschaft in vielen Ländern bereits nachhaltig verändert und wird dies aufgrund der prognostizierten Entwicklung auch in Zukunft tun, möglicherweise sogar sehr grundlegend.
