Zusammenfassung
Von der Intemationalisierung einer Nonprofit-Organisation (NPO) soll dann gesprochen werden, wenn diese bewusst Austauschbeziehungen aufnimmt, welche nationale Grenzen überschreiten.1 Ein solches Tätigwerden über Landesgrenzen hinweg ist für den NPO-Sektor grundsätzlich kein neues Phänomen, haben sich doch gewisse religiös motivierte Organisationen—wie beispielsweise die Kirchen—schon vor Jahrhunderten internationalisiert. Indessen lässt sich seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs eine ganz markante Zunahme der internationalen Tätigkeit im Dritten Sektor feststellen.2 Obwohl die diesbezügliche Datenlage dürftig ist, zeigen die wenigen vorhandenen Statistiken ein eindrückliches Bild: So ist allein in den 25 Jahren zwischen 1977 und 2002 die Anzahl der im Yearbook of International Organizations aufgeführten international tätigen NPO um rund 300 % angestiegen.3 Als Folge dieser rasanten Entwicklung wird heute die Anzahl länderübergreifend aktiver NPO weltweit auf einen mindestens vierstelligen Betrag geschätzt.4
