Zusammenfassung
Das Phänomen der technologischen Diversifikation im Sinne der Akkumulation und Erweiterung technologischer Kompetenzen hat erst seit kurzem das Interesse der Wissenschaft geweckt. Nur wenige Autoren haben sich bislang fokussiert mit dieser Thematik auseinandergesetzt. Dagegen ist die Produktdiversifikation ein seit über 30 Jahren gut dokumentiertes Phänomen in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur. Beginnend mit den theoretischen Arbeiten von Penrose (1959) und den empirischen Untersuchungen von Rumelt (1972) wurde die Produktdiversifikation sowohl aus industrieökonomischer Perspektive als auch aus Sicht der Managementforschung untersucht.1 Die zahlreichen empirischen Studien konstatieren zunächst eine deutliche Zunahme der Produktdiversifikation von Unternehmen seit Ende des zweiten Weltkrieges bis hinein in die 80er Jahre.2 Die Zunahme der Produktdiversifikation ist in diesem Zeitraum eng mit dem Unternehmenswachstum verbunden.3 Seit Anfang bzw. Mitte der 80er Jahre wurde ein Rückgang der Produktdiversifikation festgestellt.4
