Zusammenfassung
Bisher vorliegende Forschungsergebnisse (Kühnel und Terwey 1994; Terwey 2000; Wiegand 1992; Winkler 1999) haben gezeigt, dass fremdenfeindliche Einstellungen gegenüber Gastarbeitern seit den frühen achtziger Jahren bis in die Mitte der neunziger Jahre zurückgegangen sind. Im Laufe der Zeit fanden Forderungen, Ausländer bei steigender Arbeitslosigkeit auszuweisen, ihnen politische Beteiligung zu verweigern und gemischte Ehen zu verhindern, also Forderungen, die Ausdruck von Ablehnung der sozialen Integration von Ausländern sind, immer weniger Rückhalt in der westdeutschen Bevölkerung. Dieser Wandel schien ein Indiz dafür zu sein, dass die gesellschaftliche Basis für die soziale Integration von Ausländern in Westdeutschland breiter geworden war. Ein vergleichbarer Trend ließ sich z. B. auch in den Vereinigten Staaten feststellen (Schuman et al. 1997), jedoch nicht in den Niederlanden (Coenders und Scheepers 1998). In den Jahren 1994 bis 1996 vollzog sich dann allerdings ein Wandel in Deutschland, der auf eine leichte Gegenbewegung hindeutet: Die Ablehnung der sozialen Integration von Ausländern fand eine breitere Basis. Unsere erste Fragestellung befasst sich mit dieser Längsschnittentwicklung: Hat sich die Mitte der neunziger Jahre festgestellte Tendenz zu verstärkter Ablehnung der sozialen Integration von Ausländern bis zum Jahr 2000 fortgesetzt? Wir beginnen unsere Analyse mit der Beschreibung dieser Entwicklung von 1980 bis zum Jahr 2000.
