Abstract
This book is about institutions through which human beings interact with their environment. Solving growing global environmental problems appears to be beyond the reach of individuals: it requires institutional changes. Individual action is of course needed to attain the objectives of a more sustainable world. However, individual action without institutional support remains powerless in the face of the multiple barriers that render unsustainable so many aspects of human life. Individual actions and institutions are, therefore, inextricably interwoven; they can mutually reinforce as well as block one another.
