Some Trends in Psychological Research on Adolescence

Zusammenfassung

Zunächst werden kurz die historischen Entwicklungslinien der psychologischen Jugendforschung skizziert. Danach folgt eine Übersicht zu neuen Forschungen über klassische Themen, so die Rolle der Pubertät in der psychosozialen Entwicklung, die Bedeutung sozialen Wandels und einschneidender Ereignisse, sowie Erkenntnisse über die Vielfalt von Entwicklungsverläufen von unterschiedlichen Populationen, etwa Immigranten. Die Beispiele beziehen sich auf deutsche Untersuchungen, die aber im Zusammenhang mit Forschungslinien in vielen Ländern stehen. Zum Schluss wird erläutert, inwiefern diese Forschungen über Jugend einen Beitrag zu theoretischen Grundfragen der Psychologie leisten.

Abstract

The chapter begins with a short sketch of the historical roots relevant in research on adolescence. The main part concerns new research and insight in three selected topics of adolescence, namely, effects of puberty on psychosocial development, the role of social change and salient life events, and the heterogeneity of adolescents’ trajectories. The examples draw on research particularly pursued in Germany but related to lines of research worldwide. In closing, the relevance of psychological research on adolescence is discussed for theorizing in psychology in general.
