Zusammenfassung

Es gibt Gestalten der Weltgeschichte mit einem nachweisbaren „Œuvre“ als Lebensleistung, dessen Bedeutung man interpretieren kann, und andere, deren Leistung sich in ihrem Leben erschöpft. Ihre Gewichtigkeit ist nicht geringer als die der ersten, aber sie ist anders. Da ihr Werk nicht eigentlich palpabel ist, sondern eher persönlich-paradigmatisch, etwa als atmosphärische Ausstrahlung, ist es einerseits zwar schwer zu fassen, hat aber unter Umständen eine gewaltige Diffusionskraft und vermag damit die Kultur eines ganzen Zeitalters zu verändern. Sie stehen daher immer am Anfang einer Zeitenwende, der sie zur Selbstaussprache verhelfen. So spricht Tolstoi einmal vom Morgengrauen oder besser: der Zeit zwischen der Nacht und dem Tage, da die Philosophie sich anschickt zu erwachen und „die Massen zu ergreifen“.
