Zusammenfassung
Umweltzeichen genießen in vielen Ländern ein hohes Ansehen. Diese umweltpolitische Innovation findet sich mittlerweile nicht nur in vielen Industrieländern, sondern auch in zahlreichen Schwellenländern. Umweltzeichen sind zwar eher als Ergänzung denn als Ersatz für die traditionellen Formen der Regulierung anzusehen (Harrison 1999: 110), doch ist zu erwarten, dass dieses neue umweltpolitische Instrument zukünftig eine wichtige Rolle in der Umweltpolitik spielen wird.162 Zudem haben aktuelle Studien gezeigt, dass sich Umweltzeichensysteme schneller verbreiten als andere Politikinstrumente der zweiten Generation (z. B. Umweltpolitikpläne, Nachhaltigkeitsstrategien oder Ökosteuern) (Kern et al. 2001).
