Zusammenfassung
Der vorliegende Band ist das Ergebnis des Versuchs, die Erträge der international vergleichenden Forschung in der Politischen Kommunikation zu bilanzieren und Perspektiven aufzeigen, wohin sie sich entwickeln könnte und sollte. Als Jay Blumler und Michael Gurevitch vor mehr als 25 Jahren mahnten, man müsse die politische Kommunikation um die Perspektive des internationalen Vergleichs erweitern, konnten sie erst auf wenige entsprechende Untersuchungen verweisen (Blumler/Gurevitch 1975). Diese Leerstelle der Kommunikationsforschung war umso eklatanter, als die komparative Forschung in den sozialwissenschaftlichen Nachbardisziplinen längst gut etabliert war. Gerade in der Politikwissenschaft ist der vergleichende Ansatz im Rahmen der „Comparative Politics“fest verankert. Für Massenmedien und politische Kommunikation haben sich vergleichende Politikwissenschaftler jedoch nie sonderlich interessiert. Dagegen war die politische Kommunikation in der Kommunikationswissenschaft schon immer ein zentrales Thema, allerdings glaubte man lange, sie anhand von nationalen Einzelphänomenen oder historischen Studien beschreiben zu können. Eine der Politikwissenschaft vergleichbare internationale Orientierung fehlte der Kommunikationswissenschaft (Kaase 1998; Schönbach 1998).
