Zusammenfassung

Interpersonelle Gewalt finden wir in alien menschlichen Gesellschaften. Durch Gewaltakte sterben weltweit mehr Menschen als durch jede andere Todesursache. Und selbst wenn Gewalthandlungen nicht mit Todesfolge einhergehen, verursachen sie bei den Opfern schwerwiegende und oft bleibende Schäden. In den Vereinigten Staaten geben mindestens 15% der Bevölkerung an, körperlich belästigt, angegriffen oder vergewaltigt worden zu sein. Männer (11,1 %) werden häufiger mit körperlichen Gewalterfahrungen konfrontiert als Frauen (10,3 %), während Frauen (7,3 %) häufiger Opfer sexueller Übergriffe werden (1,3 % bei Männern) (van der Kolk 2000 a). In einigen Gesellschaften kommen erheblich mehr Gewalthandlungen vor als in anderen. Für die unterschiedliche Gewaltbereitschaft werden zahlreiche Faktoren verantwortlich gemacht, die an anderer Stelle in diesem Band erörtert werden. Hierzu zählen u. a. Armut, markante Unterschiede in den Geschlechterrollen und im Einkommen zwischen den oberen und unteren gesellschaftlichen Schichten, Duldung von Gewalt als Mittel zur Beseitigung von Konflikten und starre ideologische Überzeugungen, die keine Abweichung erlauben.
