Zusammenfassung
Die ländervergleichende Forschung kann mehrere aussagekräftige Beiträge zum Verständnis von Gewaltkriminalität leisten. Zum einen ermöglicht sie eine Einschätzung der Variabilität der Raten und Muster von Gewaltverbrechen. In seiner klassischen Erörterung über die „Normalität des Verbrechens“ argumentiert Durkheim (1964: 66), dass das Verbrechen eng mit den Bedingungen des gesamten gesellschaftlichen Lebens verbunden sei, was ihn zu der Schlussfolgerung kommen lässt, eine Gesellschaft ohne Verbrechen sei undenkbar. Gleiches könnte ohne weiteres auch für das Gewaltverbrechen in den heutigen Nationen gelten. Dem Zwang ausübenden Handeln ist der Nutzen immanent, sich andere Menschen gefügig zu machen (vgl. Tedeschi/Felson 1994), und daher könnte ein gewisses Maß an Gewalt ein unvermeidliches Charakteristikum komplexer Formen sozialer Organisation sein. Dennoch veranschaulicht die länderübergreifende Forschung die Bandbreite an Möglichkeiten, das Ausmaß der Gewaltkriminalität zu minimieren.
