Zusammenfassung
Die Mathematische Statistik, als eigene Disziplin etwa um 1890 entstanden, hat sich insbesondere im angelsächsischen Sprachraum zu einem selbständigen Teilgebiet der Mathematik entwickelt. Der folgende Beitrag will zum einen die Mathematisierung der Statistik anhand einiger wichtiger Marksteine aufzeigen; zum anderen sollen relevante Beiträge aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum skizziert werden. Die Grenzen zur Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie sind naturgemäß fließend. Der Leser findet deshalb manches für die Statistik Bedeutsame auch im Artikel von U. Krengel. Verschiedenen Kollegen danke ich für ausführliche Gespräche und wertvolle Hinweise. Leider konnten nicht alle interessanten Aspekte erwähnt und zumeist nur Sekundärliteratur genannt werden. Die Fußnoten beziehen sich auf die nicht in Bildlegenden enthaltenen, am Schluß des Artikels zusammengestellten biographischen Daten, Jahreszahlen in eckigen Klammern auf das Literaturverzeichnis.
