Die Gründungskörper der Bauwerke liegen stets unterhalb der Geländeoberfläche, bei Gründungen in offenem Wasser unterhalb der Gewässersohle. Sie werden in der Regel in Gruben — den sogenannten Baugruben — erstellt. Nur einige Sondergründungsverfahren, beispielsweise die Senkkastengründung, erfordern keine Baugruben.
