Zusammenfassung
Um ein Nachrichtensignal analog oder digital über elektrische Leitungen, Fasern oder Funk zu übertragen, wird es meist in einer höheren als der natürlichen Frequenzlage benötigt. Die hierfür notwendige Transponierung des Signals wird Modulation genannt. Das Verfahren wird Scit langem in der Funktechnik, in der Trägerfrequenztechnik und auch bei der magnetischen Bandaufzeichnung angewendet. Bei optischer Übertragung wird als Trägerschwingung meist die Strahlung eines Lasers benutzt, es ist jedoch auch möglich, inkohärente Strahlung, die z. B. von einer LED oder auch einer Glühlampe abgegeben wird, zu verwenden. In diesem Falle sind allerdings nicht alle aus der Funktechnik bekannten Modulationsverfahren anwendbar.
